Pros:
- Excellent tasting coffee that is quite hot.
- Superior to a model with a burner; the flavor of the coffee will not continually degrade after brewing by being actively heated.
- Looks nice and is easy to clean.
Cons:
- The lid is atrocious. It's nearly the exact size of the top of the carafe, so there's nothing to hold on to except some sharp spokes that stick out. I literally could not get it loose the first time I made coffee. After a dozen or so removals, it became looser, but I almost always need to use a rag to get a good enough grip to remove it. It's not a deal-breaker, but it is annoying.
Suggestions:
- Like all of these carafe brewing systems, your coffee will not retain heat anywhere near as good as if it were in a high-quality stand-alone carafe. The nature of a cap that needs a passive way for liquid to enter makes it impossible. If you plan to keep the coffee for longer than 2 hours, I suggest immediately transferring it to a true carafe after you brew it. (If you do choose to do it that way, don't tighten the lid too much and that one negative issue will become moot.)
- I find that brewing a half a pot of coffee at double-strength then adding hot water produces far better-tasting coffee than a full pot. I don't know if this has to do with the 3-minute rule of thumb, but this has been true for every coffee-maker I've tried. It eliminates a lot of the bitterness you sometimes get, while still providing a very strong and delicious cup of coffee. (Taste the first half of what is brewed vs. the second half, and you'll see why. The second half is quite bitter and looks like iced tea.)Get more detail about Zojirushi EC-BD15 Fresh Brew Thermal Carafe Coffee Maker.
