After 15 years, three Brauns, twice as many carafes and burned coffee, I bought the Zoji EC-BD15 (US$54 at Navy Exchange) to solve the broken carafe/burned coffee issues. In short order it did both. Now if it will last 15 years, I'll have it made.
My 10-year-old gold filter was a bit tall to fit snugly, but still performed without a problem. I decided to replace it with a new swissinox #4 permanent cone filter (US$3.99 at Navy Exchange) and it fits like it was made for the EC-BD15.
In the first days I two operator-induced spills. The first one I left the warming cover on. The second, my wife or son did the same. Since then, we're all aware and watchful. No more spillage.
