After buying a number of cheap $30 coffee makers that lasted an incredibly short period of time (6-8 months), I was looking for something that would last a little longer. I was also interested in a thermal brewer, because I don't like the taste of burnt coffee, and I often drink coffee throughout the day. Unfortunately, reviews for almost all the thermal coffeemakers reported spillover problems, or needing to be very precise with placing the carafe. Another complaint I often read for other thermal brewers was that the coffee was not hot enough. The Zohirushi seemed to be the only one in a reasonable price range that didn't get bad reviews because of these. We did have one other appliance from Zojirushi, a breadmaker, that we've found very well engineered and reliable, so we decided to take a chance on this coffeemaker.
We love it. It makes great tasting coffee, never spills over, and keeps it warm. This coffeemaker is a great deal, I don't think anyone could be disappointed with it. The thing is probably underpriced.
(By the way, when I first got it, for some reason I thought I had to dial the lid to the carafe to make the dot 180 degrees from open, but that is not necessary, so no need to force it.)
Update: Originally purchased in Oct, 2006 and as of Jun, 2009, this coffeemaker is still working great. Get more detail about Zojirushi EC-BD15 Fresh Brew Thermal Carafe Coffee Maker.
