I previously submitted a review of this machine but the Amazon machinery routed it to the unknown. Anyway...
A year later and these are the faults.
The lid is a ridiculous Rube Goldberg contraption.
1. Too many parts, one of which is removed from the carafe entirely during brewing.
2. Screw to close works OK, but does lend itself to sticking as noted in other reviews. Closing the lid to any degree of tightness invites problems. That said, there is no need to close the lid beyond just shut.
3. Zoji did not see fit to provide clear hashmarks to indicate when the lid is properly open for pouring. I remedied that with a dab of yellow paint in the provided indicator dot.
4. Unless the carafe is placed in a specific location on its base for brewing it will dispense coffee outside the carafe. That spot is easy to locate,at least on mine. I place the pot on the base and then pull it to the side until the carafe bottom stops against the rim of the base.
The unit is tall and becomes a third again taller when the reservoir cover is open for filling coffee and water.
The unit is utilitarian. No frills, the base is mostly black plastic, not even thick black plastic.
The pros
1. Great coffee. Strong. We use a #4 gold filter and it fits like a glove.
2. Hot coffee. Well 185f. I would like 195 but 185 is acceptable and contrary to some reviewers experiences, the carafe will keep the coffee at or near that temp for about four hours. After six hours it's still drinkable, after eight hours, it's ice coffee or down the drain.
3. The coffee mixing tank is removeable for cleaning.
4. The carafe is presentable.
5. The electronics are simple and work.
6. There is no warming function. Hot coffee brewed into the carafe and the unit shuts off. (That there are coffeemakers and other devices that automatically brew and deliver liquid above electric heating elements without human oversight is another indication of the kind of mediocre engineering that mass produced homewares has fostered.)
I'm not a barrista or afficionado. I like coffee. Roast my own fresh and prefer french press but I live in the real world and it begins at 4:30AM with a cup of drip brew that was ground the night before and set on timer.
When I come in around 9AM if I'm so inclined the coffee is still worth drinking.
I will buy another one.
