This is a nice machine. However, if you have any problems with your hands (arthritis, etc.)I'd stongly discourage you from buying it. The lid for the carafe is very hard to open and close. My husband and I both have a hard time with it and we are both very strong and healthy. Not only is the fit of the lid very snug, the little notches on the side of it(which are probably meant to make it easier to turn)dig into your hand which slightly hurts. To be fair, I've only had mine a week and maybe over time the lid will loosen and become easier to turn. Other than that I like it. For me personally the look of the machine makes up for it. About the filters...you do NOT need to cut an inch off the tops of the #4 filters or buy #3's like some reviewers suggest. The standard #4 cone filters by Melitta work fine. But you can't just plop them in or they stick up a 1/2 inch. You need to push down on the inside of the filter with your fingers to form fit the filter with the shape of the basket.
